Skymagic launches pioneering laser drones at UAE show

Skymagic has launched pioneering laser drones at a New Year’s Eve show in Ras Al Khaimah in the United Arab Emirates. A fleet of 47 laser drones joined 1,400 LED swarm drones alongside a pyrotechnic show put on by Fireworks by Grucci.

Skymagic’s laser drones have been developed in collaboration with lighting design and research studio Light Electric.

Writing on LinkedIn, Skymagic cofounder and director Patrick O'Mahony said: "The laser drones are a major technical revolution in the use of swarm drones to tell stories in the night’s sky."

The laser drones were previewed in a talk almost two years ago at SWSW 2023 by O'Mahony and Skymagic head of client services Paul Crick, who showed a render of a laser drone show.

The latest Ras Al Khaimah New Year's Eve show also set two Guinness World Records, for largest aerial display of a tree and largest aerial image of a seashell formed by drones.

The emirate's New Year's Eve programme was entitled Our Story in the Sky, and displayed a series of cultural symbols to tell the story of the emirate and its ecosystem, pearl diving legacy and seafaring history.
