Immersive LED room tells story that combats desertification

Immersive LED room tells story that combats desertification
The “Our Land, Our Future” immersive LED and spatial audio experience at COP16 in Saudi Arabia helped visitors understand desertification’s dangers at a visceral level.

An immersive experience, combining 360° animation, audio engineering, and custom LED architecture has been deployed to highlight the devastating effects of land degradation.

Developed by Impossible Creative, in collaboration with production partner TruXperience, the experience was hosted at the COP16 conference in Saudi Arabia, a conference bringing together parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification.

Powered by Impossible’s WonderRoom platform, “Our Land, Our Future” took place in a custom-built LED room with four seamless LED walls and an LED ceiling. This enveloped viewers with vivid depictions of oasis, desert, and family life. Inside, a custom bridge with a concealed speaker system also delivered spatial audio, with an original score recorded by 20 live musicians.

The immersive show told the story of a farming family facing the devastating effects of land degradation. Years of unsustainable practices and a catastrophic sandstorm left their future uncertain. Thanks to the ingenuity of two children who nurture a seedling, the family adopted sustainable farming methods, showing us how to live in harmony with the land.

Matt Kassirer, creative director at Impossible Creative, commented: "Stories vividly experienced together and in person have a way of deeply impacting us. This is the great promise of immersive. For COP16, we wanted to humanise the dangers of inaction and inspire action."

Christopher Kirwan, visiting professor at Prince Sultan University Riyadh, added: "The WonderRoom's integration of spatial, sensory, and narrative elements highlights both causes and solutions to environmental challenges, engaging audiences on a visceral level."

"Our Land, Our Future" brought together storytellers, animators, and musicians from Canada, Egypt, Poland, South Africa, and the USA. Additionally, partners Shaikh-tech (hardware installation and integration), Edge Visual (animation), and TrendVFX (360° video rendering) were instrumental in the production.
